1. Not Draining — Standing Water in Tub

Cause: Clogged drain pump filter, blocked drain hose, or failed drain pump motor. Most modern washers will not enter the spin cycle until the tub is empty — so a drain failure also causes a spin failure.

Error codes: F9E1 (Whirlpool/Maytag/Amana platform), OE (LG-platform Kenmore), E20/E21 (Electrolux), 5E/nF (Samsung).

✅ DIY first step: On front-load washers, open the small access panel at the lower front and clean the pump filter. Coins, bobby pins, and lint often cause OE and F9E1 errors — cleaning the filter resolves many of these calls for free.

If filter clean does not fix it: Drain pump replacement — $110–$210 including labor.

2. Not Spinning

The #2 most common washer call in Carroll County. See our full guide: Washer Not Spinning Fix →

Quick summary: shift actuator (F7E1 on Whirlpool platform), lid switch (top-load), door latch (front-load), or blocked drain pump. Cost: $90–$200.

3. Not Filling with Water

Cause: Water supply valves not fully open (check both hot and cold valves behind the washer), clogged inlet valve screens, or failed water inlet valve.

Error codes: LF (Whirlpool platform — Long Fill), IE (LG platform), E11 (Electrolux/Frigidaire).

✅ DIY step 1: Confirm both supply valves are fully open. Step 2: Turn off supply, disconnect the inlet hoses, and check the small mesh screens in the valve inlets — lint and sediment clog them over time. Clean and reinstall.

If error continues after checking valves and screens: Water inlet valve replacement — $100–$190.

4. Leaking Water

Identify the leak source before calling — it helps us bring the right part:

5. Excessive Vibration or "Walking" Across the Floor

Causes: Unbalanced load (redistribute clothing evenly), unlevel machine (check that all 4 feet are touching the floor and the machine is level), worn suspension rods (top-load), or worn shock absorbers (front-load).

💡 Quick test: Run an empty drum cycle. If vibration is severe on an empty drum, the suspension components need replacement — $120–$240.

6. Loud Noise During Cycle

7. Won't Start

Top-load washers: Lid switch failure — machine cannot detect lid is closed and will not start any cycle.

Front-load washers: Door lock failure — door must lock before cycle can begin. Error codes: dL (Whirlpool), dE/dE1 (LG), E40 (Electrolux).

All machines: Try unplugging for 60 seconds to reset the control board. If control panel is completely unresponsive after reset, the control board may have failed.

8. Clothes Coming Out Soaking Wet

Clothes should come out of the washer damp, not dripping wet. If consistently soaking wet, the machine is not reaching full spin RPM. Most common causes: shift actuator issue (F7E1), worn drive belt slipping, or partially failed motor. The drain pump should also be checked — if it is not draining fully, spin speed is reduced.

9. Mold or Mildew Smell

Front-load washers are prone to mold in the door boot seal and drum — the combination of cool water, sealed door, and HE detergent residue creates ideal mold conditions. Georgia humidity makes it worse.

Treatment: Run the hottest cycle available with a washer cleaner tablet. Manually clean the door boot seal with mildew cleaner. Leave the door open between cycles going forward.

If mold is deep in the boot seal: Boot gasket replacement — $130–$250. Prevents mold from recurring.
